Duvet covers are a popular and convenient way to protect your duvet insert while adding a fresh look to your bedding.

However, getting the duvet insert to stay in place inside the cover, especially if it’s sizable, can be a bit of a challenge.

This is where duvet ties come into play. Ties inside a duvet cover help secure the duvet insert at the corners (and sometimes the middle of each side), preventing it from shifting and bunching up.

If you’ve ever struggled with putting a duvet cover on, especially one with ties, this detailed guide is for you.

to Put a Duvet Cover on with Ties: Prepare Your Duvet Cover and Insert

Start by laying out your duvet insert and duvet cover to ensure they are both clean and dry.

If your duvet cover has been stored for a while, you might want to iron or steam it to remove any wrinkles.

This will make the process smoother and ensure your bedding looks its best once assembled.

Step 2: Turn the Duvet Cover Inside Out

Lay the duvet cover flat on the bed, with the opening at the bottom.

Then, turn it inside out. Reach inside the cover and find the two top corners. Your goal is to use these corners as handles in the next steps.

Step 3: Tie the Top Corners

Take your duvet insert and lay it flat on top of the inside-out duvet cover. Match the top corners of the duvet insert with the top corners of the duvet cover.

If your duvet cover comes with ties, you will find them located at the inside corners (and possibly at the mid-points of each side).

Secure the top corners of the insert to the cover by tying the corresponding ties firmly. Make sure not to tie them too tight to prevent damaging the fabric but tight enough to hold the duvet in place.

Step 4: Rolling Method (Optional but Effective)

This method involves rolling the duvet cover and insert together to simplify the process of encasing the insert. Once the top corners are tied:

  1. Stand at the foot of the bed and begin rolling the duvet cover and insert towards the head of the bed, much like rolling a giant sushi roll.
  2. Once you reach the top, you’ll have a rolled-up bundle. Invert the duvet cover around this roll by pulling the farthest end of the cover around the roll towards you, essentially unrolling the bundle inside the cover as you go.
  3. When you’ve encased the entire duvet insert, secure the remaining ties at the bottom corners and along the sides if applicable.
  4. Unroll the bundle, and you’ll have the duvet insert perfectly placed inside the cover. Give it a good shake and smooth out any wrinkles.

Step 5: Secure the Bottom of the Duvet Cover

Once the top and possibly the sides are secured with ties, it’s time to close the cover. Most duvet covers have buttons, zippers, or snaps at the opening.

Carefully close the opening to encase the duvet completely.

Step 6: Fluff and Smooth

Finally, give your duvet a good shake from the top to ensure even distribution of the insert. This also helps to fluff up the duvet, making it look and feel cozier.

Lay the duvet flat on the bed and smooth out any remaining wrinkles or bumps with your hands.

Additional Tips

  • Regular Checks: Periodically check the ties to ensure they remain secure, especially after washing.
  • Even Distribution: Occasionally, you may need to adjust the duvet insert within the cover for even distribution of the fill.
  • Quality Matters: Invest in a duvet cover with sturdy ties and a durable closing mechanism to withstand regular use and laundering.

By following these steps, you can easily put a duvet cover on with ties, ensuring your duvet insert stays in place, looking neat, and feeling comfortable.

This method not only simplifies the process but also enhances the overall look and feel of your bedding, making it a worthwhile skill to master.
